DIY Pumpkin Centerpieces for Halloween

Whether you’re hosting an elegant masquerade or just want to give your home some festive autumnal cheer, a pumpkin centerpiece will always be a great decor option. Teleflora has a variety of gorgeous Halloween flowers, complete with seasonal keepsake vases, to fit your needs, but if you’re looking for a way to display the flowers you’ve grown this fall, here are a few ways to create a table centerpiece with real or plastic pumpkins:

Flower Covered Pumpkins
If you have a surplus of flat fall flowers, like mums or dahlias, and want a eye-catching centerpiece for a party, try covering your pumpkins with the flower’s blooms. While this kind of centerpiece won’t have a very long life span since you’ll be cutting off the flower’s water supply, it’ll last for the duration of the party, and people will love it! Simply snip the flowers off of the stems and use a hot glue gun to attach the flowers to the pumpkin. Cover the whole surface with flowers. To create a more elaborate display, vary the size of the pumpkins, the color of flowers, and the stand you display them on.

Real Pumpkins as Vases
Since pumpkins are so bulky, the best way to decorate with one as a vase is to create a busy, lush fall flower arrangement. Be sure to include some greenery and maybe even twigs and golden leaves. You can do this with any size pumpkin, as long as you trim the stems to the appropriate length. Simply empty the pumpkin of all of its insides – saving the seeds to roast – and coat the inside flesh with petroleum jelly to keep it from molding. While you can fill the pumpkin itself with water, you can also use flower foam or dirt to keep the flowers in place and also extend their lives. If you have a plastic container that’s a similar size of the pumpkin, place that inside the pumpkin to keep water in without having to get the pumpkin wet. Just make sure your bouquet is large enough to cover the container!

Plastic Pumpkin as Vases
You know those plastic jack o’lanterns  you get for your kids to take trick-or-treating each year? Would you believe you could make an elegant centerpiece with it? Well, there are a few ways to do so. You probably don’t want to display them as is, in their bright orange glory, so a simple coat of spray paint can allow you to customize them. If your Halloween decor focuses on black and silver, spray them a metallic silver, but if you have more of a harvest theme going on, consider gold instead. You can house a bouquet inside, following the above instructions, or even fill the plastic pumpkins with dirt and plant some succulents inside. Some plant-safe spray paint can allow you to customize them even more, for a spookier Halloween aesthetic! Some black echiveria in a silver pumpkin would be an awesome nontraditional decoration!

Ways to protect your garden from spring frost

Are you starting notice bits of frost on your flowers and foliage? While chilly nights are the norm in spring, you may have started gardening a bit too soon. If you don’t know how to properly tend to your garden and protect your plants from frost, this could pose a serious threat. A freeze occurs when temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Water inside the plant freezes and causes the cells to burst.
There is an array of vulnerable plants that will be vastly affected by a freeze. These include both house and tropical plants, spring-blooming shrubs, trees, tender bulbs, warm-season vegetables like tomato, corn and pepper, and warm-season annuals like impatiens, petunia and geranium
.
Here are three ways to protect your garden from spring frost:
1. Bring them indoors
If your plants are in a container like Teleflora’s Orchid & Tropical Plants, simply bring them inside until the weather starts to warm up. If they’re bulbed plants like tulips, consider digging them up and storing them in a cool, dry place. Check out all the latest Teleflora coupon codes, promo codes & discounts for 2016 http://coupon4share.com/store/teleflora.com
2. Hydrate before a frost
Check the weather daily, and be sure to thoroughly water your plants before the cold comes. You should be watering your soil about 6 inches deep. Damp soil traps more heat than dry soil, so hydrating your plants will add insulation and help prevent desiccation in your flowers.
3. Cover them up overnight
Before you turn in for the night, be sure to tuck your plants in – they’re your babies, too! Uncover all plants in the morning if the weather is above 40 degrees.
Sprouts
For your tender sprouts, place an upside down bucket or flower pot on top of them.
Shrubs and trees
For larger pants like your shrubs and trees, layer and cover them with bedding, burlap or frost cloths – steer clear of plastic. Completely drape the cover over the foliage, making sure it goes all the way to the ground.
Garden flowers
Submerge stakes into the ground around your flowers to prop the bedsheets or lightweight blankets up. This will help prevent squishing your beautiful blooms.
Don’t make the mistake of leaving the covering over your plants for multiple days in a row – especially when the weather doesn’t call for more than one day of frost.  Take the protection off as soon as those sunny rays are shining bright. The reason being is because plants cannot breathe under heavy containers or layers of fabric. The quick removal of any protective covering will eliminate the creation of another stress factor for your plants.

Your Fall Flower Guide to Mums

One of the defining flowers of fall is the chrysanthemum, also simply known as the mum. With so many varieties of this gorgeous flower, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of ways to enjoy them, from planting the blooms yourself or decorating your home and landscape with them. Mums symbolize optimism and joy, making them a fabulous choice for your decor. Here’s all you need to know about these elegant seasonal blooms.

Here Are A Few Varieties
Many people think of mums as simple and one-dimensional, coming in just a few autumnal shades. However, there are actually multiple varieties of mums, in a rainbow of colors! Since these flowers are so sturdy, they’re great for decorating and last quite a while in a vase!
  • Apricot Alexis: These flowers tend to grow in an obvious apricot color. Once the blooms fully open, they’re quite large and can easily be the center of attention in autumnal flower bouquets.
  • Candid: Candid mums are a usually a deep red with lighter ends on their petals. Like Alexises, when the blooms open, they’re one of the larger varieties of mum.
  • Seatons ruby: These mums are also two-toned, with their red petals typically tipped with a golden hue. When fully bloomed, seatons rubies have traditional mum petals around the outer edge, but a large, raised cushiony center.
  • Honeyglow: If you’re thinking of mums, you’re probably thinking of the honeyglow. The typical mum tends to grow in red, oranges and golds. It’s a classic choice that’s sure to add some bright color to your decor.
While these are the colloquial terms for these blooms, you can also tell your local nursery that you’re looking for spider, quill, button, cushion or anemone mums.

Growing Mums
Mums are very hearty flowers with a long life in the ground and in a vase. However, when growing your own mums, you need to make sure you take proper care of them to ensure they reach their peak. These flowers need at least six hours of sun per day, so try not to plant them alongside your house or garage if that area is typically shaded.
Plant your mums in August so they’ll hit their peak as the leaves begin to change, giving your yard a gorgeous autumnal vibe. When you’re growing baby mums, you’ll want to make sure they’re watered very frequently. Once they begin to grow, you can cut back a bit, but still make sure the soil is always moist. If they’re taken care of properly and they’re in an optimal location, your mums will grow year after year! They don’t have to grow directly in the ground, though. A deep flower pot is a great option for your fall flower arrangements, indoors or outdoors.

Decorating with Mums
The great thing about growing mums is that you can easily trim them and put the blooms in vases in your home. You get to enjoy them everywhere! They also have a long lifespan when they’re cut, lasting between a week and two if you care for them properly. Be sure to change the water in the vase every day and keep them in a cool area of your home.

The Five Best Flowers for Summer

Now that summer is officially underway, it seems as if the world is in full bloom at last. Whether you get to spend all summer outside or just have to admire it from your desk, adding some brilliant seasonal blooms adds the perfect touch to your daily routine. Here is a list of our top five flowers for summer (and our favorite Teleflora bouquets), so you can celebrate this short, but sweet season surrounded by the best nature has to offer.

1) Roses:
While these famous flowers are most often associated with Valentine’s Day flowers in February, roses love summer. They are actually considered by some to be the first sign of the season because most varieties start blooming in mid-June in full sun, and then again in the fall when temperatures drop slightly. The staggering popularity of this flower means that it grows in almost every color imaginable, so don’t feel limited to red. Arrangements like Teleflora’s Blossoms in Vogue Bouquet are just as spectacular with multicolored roses in warm hues of yellow, pink, and orange as a bouquet of a dozen red roses.
 2) Dahlias:
One of the most versatile flowers of summer are dahlias; these interesting blooms are the official flower of Mexico and love warm, dry weather. Dahlias come in a truly staggering array of colors and grow in several different varieties. The striking, spiky flowers vary in size and shape and bloom for much of the summer. While they are not fragrant, they are so eye catching that they make wonderful additions to any arrangement.

3) Daisies:
These simple but pleasant flowers have earned a reputation for being happy and friendly symbols of the summer season. Daisies bloom throughout June and July and come in several varieties, but perhaps the most recognizable is the Shasta Daisy, the white-petaled, yellow-faced flower seen in gardens all around the world. Often integrated into summer bouquets, like Teleflora’s Sunny Day Pitcher of Daisies, they are an excellent flower to celebrate the long and lazy days of the season.

4) Lilies:
These fragrant flowers are synonymous with summer. Wild lilies thrive in almost every environment and spread quickly in damp sunny spots, such as creek beds. While wild lilies are typically small with orange blooms and long, spiky leaves, cultivated hybrid varieties like Easter lilies are most often used in bouquets; their fragrant flowers are much larger with delicate petals that are pleasant to the eye.

5) Sunflowers:
The classic symbol of summer, sunflowers are everything their name promises. These enormous flowers sit atop long, hardy stalks that can grow upwards of 6 feet tall, but smaller versions have become increasingly popular with gardeners and bouquet lovers alike. Sunflowers are featured frequently in summer bouquets, and if trimmed properly, they will look fresh and beautiful for days in an arrangement. Teleflora’s Sunny Sunflowers bouquet is the perfect touch to any room this season.

Here are three things to keep in mind when choosing flowers online for your holiday centerpiece:
1. Choose the right size for your table
The size of your dinner table is going to be the determining factor in how large your centerpiece will be. If you have a big family or are hosting extended family, you all will probably be seated around a long table. If that’s the case, don’t be afraid to use a long swag to fill out your table. Using a shorter table? Look into smaller centerpiece options, like a cornucopia.
  • Centerpieces should be less than 12″ tall or greater than 24″ tall (with a narrow vase or base) so guests can converse easily.  You don’t want your guests putting your centerpiece on the floor so they can see and talk to other guests. if your home has high ceilings, tall centerpieces can look wonderful, but remember that the flowers themselves should be higher than your line of sight.
2. Incorporate candles
The lunch or dinner you’re going to share with friends and family over the holidays is a special one. Set the appropriate mood with the lighting at the table. A great alternative to the glaring, artificial lights normally found around a kitchen table is candlelight. Try incorporating candles in your centerpiece, and you’ll have another tool make your holiday meal an intimate one.
  • Light them before guests arrive for holiday ambiance.
  • Make sure that if you are using scented candles that they don’t compete with the wonderful aromas from your holiday baking or cooking.
  • If you’re concerned about flames, use flameless candles that are battery operated.
  • Arrange your holiday centerpiece along with varying-size votive or pillar candles on a reflective silver tray or mirror.
3. Stay consistent with your decor
Keep color schemes and flower choices you’ve already used around the house in mind when choosing your centerpiece. If you’ve used poinsettias in your decorations, make sure your centerpiece has them, too. You don’t have to directly match the new centerpiece to any decor you have, but you want to ensure that it doesn’t clash with anything. Traditional holiday colors are red and green, so sticking with these tones in your flowers is always a safe option. If your other decor is topiary, your holiday centerpiece should be, too.

A Newbie’s Checklist for Sending Flowers Online

Here are four tips to remember when sending flowers online:
1. Double check everything
This may seem like a fairly obvious tip, but you’d be surprised how many people forget a piece of information that’s vital for a flower delivery. Start by double (or even triple) checking the recipient’s physical address. After all, you don’t want to send a dozen roses to a stranger! Additionally, make sure you’ve spelled his or her name correctly. The last thing you want is to make a silly mistake after going to the trouble to order flowers for a friend, family member or loved one.
2. Choose an appropriate delivery time
This will be dependent on who you are sending the flowers to and why. It may be a good idea to have flowers delivered to your sweetheart’s place of work, for instance. If that person is a teacher, you’re going to want to make sure that the order is delivered during school hours. You may want to have the floral arrangement delivered to an individual’s home. If that’s the case, try to choose a time when you know an individual will be home, like in the evening.
3. Share special instructions
When you use Teleflora, you’ll be given the opportunity to mention any special instructions that may be necessary to hand-deliver the flowers to the recipient. Include guidance like “Go to back door” or even leave a privacy gate code so that the delivery person can reach the front door. Don’t forget to list any info about the recipient that may help the delivery person, too. For example, it’s a good idea to mention if the recipient is blind or hard of hearing.
4. Add some extras

One of the best parts about ordering flowers online is that you easily can pick out accessories to go along with your beautiful bouquet. Be on the lookout for options like a box of chocolates or a teddy bear when you check out. With only a few added clicks, you can turn a simple bouquet into a birthday present just by adding a small item. Teleflora’s “Smile for Me” bouquet would look even better with added balloons or a stuffed animal, for instance.
