Flower Designs and Decor Ideas for Small Spaces

For people living in smaller apartments, huge flower arrangements and centerpieces aren’t always the most space-friendly options. Flowers and plants are a great way to brighten up any room, though, so living in a small space shouldn’t keep you from using them in your decor. If you live in an apartment, and you’re looking for ways to incorporate flowers into your home, take a look at these flower decor ideas for small spaces:

Use Succulents
Succulents are great apartment plants for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that they’re very low-maintenance. Succulent plants, like jade, aloe and cacti, don’t need much water, and they can survive and thrive indoors. Keep succulents in a relatively sunny area, ideally by a window, and water them every few days when their soil is dry (even less during the winter). Teleflora’s Peaceful Zen Garden uses succulents and bamboo for a beautiful and relaxing arrangement. Save 25% off same day delivery and send thoughtful sympathy and funeral flowers to the loved ones of the Departed. Save now! Get this Teleflora Coupon Code 25% OFF now

Create a Garden on Your End Table
To add some life to your living room, cluster several small vases and planters on one of your end tables. Put a different plant or flower in each vase and pot, and you’ll have your own miniature garden to care for. Peace lilies and African violets are good flowers for planting indoors away from a windowsill, so both can be included in your end-table arrangement for a beautiful and eclectic look.

Fill a Bold Urn
If you have some extra floor space in a corner or near a shelf, it may be the perfect spot for a large beautiful vase. Peruse discount department stores or resell shops to see if they have anything that will work. When you find one you love, fill it with long-stemmed sunflowers (real or fake!), some cool branches or a bunch of reeds.

Brighten Your Bathroom
Add a vintage vase filled with seasonal flowers to the tank of your toilet or your bathroom counter to add a breath of fresh air to your small bathroom. Go for a colorful arrangement to create an eye-catching look you and your guests will love.

Add an Orchid
Orchids are surprisingly easy to care for and can last for months, making them a lovely way to incorporate flowers into your apartment decor. Orchids are captivating and will create a statement on their own, so keep a tall one by itself on a table in your entryway or on top of a bookshelf. Teleflora’s Imperial Purple Orchid comes hand-delivered in a beautiful bamboo container.

Line a Windowsill
Though they’re sometimes overlooked, windowsills are an unexpectedly perfect surface to decorate in a small apartment. The decorations placed on windowsills won’t be in the way, as they might sometimes be on coffee tables or countertops, and they’ll catch the natural sunlight coming into the apartment. Line one of your windowsills with small decorative bud vases, each filled with just one or two flowers. The effect will be elegant and charming.

Incorporate Floral Prints
Real flowers aren’t the only way to decorate a space: Consider using floral fabrics to brighten up a room. Even just a couple of throw pillows with an abstract floral pattern will look lovely on an otherwise patternless couch or bedspread. You can also frame pieces of fabric with pretty floral prints on them and hang them together for a mini gallery wall.

Plant Herbs in the Kitchen
If you have a windowsill in your kitchen, it’s the perfect place to plant some fresh herbs for cooking. Herbs need a little bit of water and a good amount of sunlight, but they’re otherwise pretty easy to grow and maintain. Plus, you’ll save some money on groceries! Create a pretty indoor herb garden by painting small planters vibrant colors and clustering them on the windowsill.

Wedding Flower Types by Season

December is one of the most common months for couples to get engaged, so what does that mean for January? The wedding planning begins! If you and your partner are newly betrothed, you have a lot of fun and exciting details to work out, starting with the date. If either of you have any strong opinions on the florals you'd like for your wedding arrangements, that could determine when you should be planning your big day. While many flowers can be found year-round, choosing ones that are in season will likely be cheaper and ensure fresh and vibrant bouquets and centerpieces. Here's a breakdown of the most popular wedding flowers by what season they're available:

Spring and Summer
Most spring and summer weddings are full of beautiful florals, since it's the time of year when many flowers are in season. Take a look at these popular wedding flowers available during the warmer seasons:
  • Cherry Blossoms: Cherry blossoms are stunning flowers often found in Japanese gardens. They're known for having a soft pink color and are even considered a symbol of spring. They're hugely popular for spring weddings, and many brides even incorporate them into their wedding cakes and other decor.
  • Peonies: Peonies are known for being large and vibrantly colored, which is why couples love using them in their wedding arrangements.
  • Tulips: Tulips are also known for their vivid colors, and are perfect for use in a bouquet due to their longer stems and trumpet-shaped bulbs. Tulips are also available in late winter.
Fall and Winter
Fall and winter weddings have recently become even more popular than they once were. If you're looking to tie the knot during the cooler months, here are some of the flowers that will be in season:
  • Dahlias: Dahlias, which are in season beginning in late summer and are available throughout fall, are most often found in hues of red, orange, yellow and purple. The colorful florals look beautiful in fall wedding arrangements.
  • Queen Ann's Lace: The small delicate white blooms of Queen Ann's lace make them very trendy for couples to use as a filler for their bouquets and table arrangements. The small flowers look dainty and charming.
  • Gardenias: Gardenias are most often found in a soft ivory color, which is why they're so commonly used in winter wedding bouquets.
All Year
Many classically popular wedding flowers are available all year, which makes it easier for couples who love them to set a date. Take a look at these flowers that are available no matter the season:
  • Roses: Roses are perhaps the most popular wedding flower of all time. Though they come in many colors, the two you'll see most at weddings are classic red and romantic white.
  • Carnations: Carnations are thought to symbolize admiration and pure love, which complements the sentiment behind weddings perfectly. These flowers come in a huge variety of colors, and are found often in bridal arrangements.
  • Gerberas: Commonly found in shades of yellow, red and orange, gerberas are very popular for fall weddings, but they're actually available year-round. These flowers, which symbolize friendship, look beautiful in mixed arrangements and on their own.
  • Daisies: Lovely white daisies bring to mind childhood and innocence, and they also symbolize sentimentality. These charming flowers are in season all year, and are pretty affordable compared to some of the other popular wedding flowers.
  • Hydrangeas: Hydrangeas are one of the most unique-looking flowers due to their multi-bloomed voluminous heads. It's common to see hydrangeas in shades of pink, purple and blue, though white hydrangeas are very popular in winter weddings. These flowers are thought to represent devotion, making them a romantic choice for engaged couples.

Why do rose prices go up at Valentine’s Day?

Many people complain about the price increase of roses at Valentine’s Day over what they would pay for roses at any other time of the year.

Supply and demand affects the pricing of roses at Valentine’s Day:

There is a huge demand for long-stemmed roses at Valentine’s Day. Men traditionally buy a dozen red roses and want their flowers delivered on February 14th. Each phase of production costs more because of the massive volume or red roses required for just one day. $10 OFF All Bouquets Sitewide with Teleflora coupon code at Teleflora! Ends Dec 31.2015!

GROWERS: Winter’s shorter daylight hours and higher energy costs hamper efforts to grow large rose crops. To get ready for the huge volume of roses need by February 14th, the farmers have to time the growth of the plants. Essentially they halt production of roses by cutting the stems back (destroy roses) so that they produce a bumper harvest by February 14th. That means normally productive rose plants will not be producing full rose buds weeks before and weeks after the Valentines growth cycle. The cost of stopping everyday production while the Valentines roses are produced is passed on to the consumer.

The bumper harvest will produce up to three times the normal volume of roses typically harvested by the farmer. So they need to hire additional temporary labor to help the permanent staff harvest, process and pack up the roses. Several rosebuds have to be sacrificed just to create a single long stem rose.

TRANSPORTATION: Roses come by plane from Colombia and Ecuador or by truck from farms in the United States. The importers pay more for air freight as additional planes have to be used for the additional shipping volume. Also, extra trucks and drivers are needed to haul the roses from the airport to the importer warehouses and to distribute around the country. Inclement weather often requires extreme measures to ensure that flowers are delivered in time. The added transportation costs increases the cost of the roses to the end buyer.

FLORISTS: Florists have to hire additional help, work longer hours and acquire extra delivery vehicles and drivers to design and deliver the extra volume of orders.

TIP – ORDER EARLY!: If you order your Valentine’s Day flowers in January before the price increase takes effect, you will lock in the lower price on your order! Your wife or girlfriend will never know that you scored such a deal, and will be impressed with your romantic gesture!

Romantic Ways to Propose in December

December is a month meant for romance, with its ubiquitous white snow and pretty twinkling lights, and the cold weather that keeps people snuggling up with each other indoors. So what month could be more perfect for a romantic proposal? If you're planning on getting down on one knee this month, here are eight romantic ways to propose in December:

1. By the Christmas Tree
Of all the possible Christmas proposals, one of the most romantic involves your fiance-to-be finding the ring among the other ornaments on the tree. Choose a beautiful ornament that symbolizes your relationship, tie the ring to it with ribbon, and place it on the tree. On Christmas morning, show her your new favorite ornament, then get on one knee when she notices the ring.
Visit at Coupon4share.com and Save 20% OFF Christmas Bestsellers with Teleflora coupon code. Offer valid through Dec 31.2015!
2. In a Gift
Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah, putting the engagement ring inside of a present is a classic proposal that any girl would love. Gather boxes of varying sizes, then put one inside of the other, with the ring box in the very middle. She'll be fooled by the gift's size, but will get more and more excited as she unwraps each box on her way to the most important one.
3. By the Fireplace
Proposals don't have to be in front of an audience to be special and beautiful. Plan an evening at home with your honey, cook her a delicious meal, and eat it together by the fire. Play games, talk and laugh, and when you're both feeling full of good food and content with each other, pull out the ring. The moment will be intimate and unforgettable.
4. Midnight on New Year's Eve
If there's ever a time for promises and resolutions, it's New Year's Eve. Host a New Year's Eve party with some close friends and family members and spend the night enjoying the company of your loved ones. During the last couple of minutes before midnight, face your sweetie and tell her the reasons you love her. Then get on one knee and ask if she'll be a part of your New Year's resolution to marry her. Make sure you finish it in time to give her a New Year's kiss!
5. In the Snow
Take advantage of the beautiful season for your romantic proposal! Find a pretty snowy spot and walk to it, or even take a snowy carriage ride around the city to set up the romantic moment. The cold weather will keep you and your girlfriend huddled together the entire time, and then the excitement of the proposal will warm you both up.
6. Destination Proposal
If you're going somewhere warmer to break up the cold season, it's the perfect time to ask your girlfriend to marry you. Destination proposals will make the trip that much more exciting, and you'll have so much fun sharing the story with all of your friends when you get home.
7. With White Roses
White roses are the flower of the season because they're commonly used for holiday decorations and winter weddings. Plus, nothing says love and romance like a rose! Buy your girlfriend a gorgeous bouquet of white roses like Teleflora's Recipe for Romance. Present her with the bouquet at dinner and tell her why you've chosen white roses specifically. When she feels the romance, get down on one knee!
8. Get Some Help
If either of you has kids, your future fiance will love if you make the proposal a family affair. Set up a room in the house with flowers and romantic music, and make signs for each member of the family to hold that say "Will you marry me?" When your girlfriend comes home, get everyone prepared. She'll be surprised and excited when everyone's a part of the special moment!

A flower from our neighbors
Although they’re all over the U.S. as decorations around the holiday season, the poinsettia plant actually has its roots in Central America. More specifically, they are native to the Aztecs of Mexico. In fact, the Aztecs had all kinds of uses for the poinsettia, from dying clothes to using the sap as medicine. The flower didn’t make its way north to the U.S. until the 1800s, when the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Robert Poinsett liked the flowers so much on a visit that he sent some back to the U.S.

A Christmas legend
The poinsettia flower is a popular one around Christmas because of the Mexican folk legend about it. The story is about two children from a poor family, Pablo and Maria, on Christmas Eve. According to the legend, the youngsters were on the way to church services that night and wanted to find a gift for Baby Jesus in the manger scene. Since they had no money, the two settled for picking some weeds they found on the side of the road on the way to church. As they placed the plants around the figurine, the green weeds turned into the bright red, star-shaped petals of the poinsettia. It’s because of this Christmas legend that the flowers are still used so frequently around the holiday season.
Although the most common kind of poinsettia is probably the red colored one, there are several varieties of the flower. In fact, you can find poinsettias in pink, white and peach colors, too. That said, the care for each type of poinsettia is the same. It’s relatively simple: Place your poinsettias in a bright room, but not anywhere that would leave them in direct sunlight. At night, move the poinsettias to a cooler place. Check the soil daily and add water if it’s dried out. Do your best to keep your plant away from a heater and air conditioning unit, as extreme temperature changes aren’t good for it. Poinsettias should stay healthy in your home for about six to eight weeks.

Top Flowers to Send in December: Narcissus and Holly

Top Flowers to Send in December: Narcissus and Holly

The month of December is unique in that it features two flowers of the month: narcissus and holly. Both flowers can be used effectively as a part of your holiday decor this year and are relatively easy to care for.

Narcissus

Fresh cut yellow daffodils and yellow bi-color daffodils are mixed with a bit of green bupleurum in a clear cube vase.
Fresh cut yellow daffodils and yellow bi-color daffodils are mixed with a bit of green bupleurum in a clear cube vase.
Narcissus is a family of spring bulb plants which includes daffodil, daffadowndilly, narcissus, and jonquil. Narcissus flowers are available from November to April depending on the species. Teleflora only offers daffodils in the springtime.Narcissus has trumpet-shaped flowers.
Narcissus plants are fairly easy to grow and don’t require much a lot of maintenance. It’s best toplant them in the fall months so they can bloom in late winter or early spring. That said, the plants are known for being hardy. They’llsurvive the harsh winters better than most flowers and have the reputation for being featured in floral arrangements around this time of the year. Not only are they December birth flowers, but they also look great as a part of holiday decorations.

This plant species is toxic when eaten. To be on the safe side, keep all of your yuletide plants out of reach of your dogs and cats (and children!) during the holidays.

Holly

Holly is the second flower of December, and it’s quite appropriate for the time of the year. Although it grows as more of a bush, the berries that grow at the end of each branch on the shrub are bright red and are associated with Christmas. Holly flowering plants have glossy leaves, typically with a spiny toothed or serrated leaf. The holly flower is greenish white, with four petals. It’s popular to trim branches off of the holly bushes to use as decor around the house for the holidays.
Caring for a holly plant isn’t too difficult. Plant it in the spring or fall in an area with moist soil and plenty of sunlight. Try to leave plenty of space between each plant, since they’ll need space to grow into bushes. Like its fellow December flower, narcissus, holly berries are poisonous, so keep this pretty plant away from food, kids and pets. Instead of using holly in your dining table’s centerpiece, try decorating with holly further away from food, like on the mantel above the fireplace, for instance.

A Newbie’s Checklist for Sending Flowers Online

Here are four tips to remember when sending flowers online:
1. Double check everything
This may seem like a fairly obvious tip, but you’d be surprised how many people forget a piece of information that’s vital for a flower delivery. Start by double (or even triple) checking the recipient’s physical address. After all, you don’t want to send a dozen roses to a stranger! Additionally, make sure you’ve spelled his or her name correctly. The last thing you want is to make a silly mistake after going to the trouble to order flowers for a friend, family member or loved one.
2. Choose an appropriate delivery time
This will be dependent on who you are sending the flowers to and why. It may be a good idea to have flowers delivered to your sweetheart’s place of work, for instance. If that person is a teacher, you’re going to want to make sure that the order is delivered during school hours. You may want to have the floral arrangement delivered to an individual’s home. If that’s the case, try to choose a time when you know an individual will be home, like in the evening.
3. Share special instructions
When you use Teleflora, you’ll be given the opportunity to mention any special instructions that may be necessary to hand-deliver the flowers to the recipient. Include guidance like “Go to back door” or even leave a privacy gate code so that the delivery person can reach the front door. Don’t forget to list any info about the recipient that may help the delivery person, too. For example, it’s a good idea to mention if the recipient is blind or hard of hearing.
4. Add some extras

Teleflora’s Smile for Me Bouquet

One of the best parts about ordering flowers online is that you easily can pick out accessories to go along with your beautiful bouquet. Be on the lookout for options like a box of chocolates or a teddy bear when you check out. With only a few added clicks, you can turn a simple bouquet into a birthday present just by adding a small item. Teleflora’s “Smile for Me” bouquet would look even better with added balloons or a stuffed animal, for instance.
